A small horse ranch in Decorah, Iowa offers two unique stays: a restored train caboose and a repurposed silo which rest on each side of a working horse barn.
The train caboose has been fully restored with a large deck for additional relaxation space.
When the caboose first arrived in Decorah, it was little more than a metal shell.
The caboose was transformed by its new owner’s woodworking skills and his daughter’s decorating style into the charming dwelling it is today.
There are multiple places to sleep, including bunk beds in the rear of the caboose and a cozy little bed in a cubby loft above the kitchen area.
The view from the deck is incredible. We awoke to a postcard-like scene of the horses grazing with Iowa’s farmland as the backdrop.
We were fortunate to have stayed shortly after one of the cats had kittens, so there were cute little ones playing outside of the caboose.
There is also a second unique place on the opposite side of the barn: a repurposed silo.
The inside of the silo has been converted into a delightful lodging with a living room and kitchen on the first level.
A flight of stairs wrap inside the silo to the bedroom and bathroom on the upper level.
It began as a vision for breathing new life into structures that outlived their initial purpose. It is now a reality, which offers people a place to relax, reflect, and reconnect.
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” Anne Frank
