Dome Retreat

Truth or Consequences is a small city in New Mexico of approximately 6400 people. This town agreed to change its name in 1950 from Hot Springs to Truth or Consequences in response to a radio contest held by a radio quiz show called Truth or Consequences. The radio show agreed to air its 10th anniversary episode on site in whichever town formally changed its name to the name of the show first. Hot Springs won the contest and has been known as Truth or Consequences ever since.

Gila Cliff Dwellings

The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument rests just north of Silver City in New Mexico. National Park Rangers are available at the base of the mountain to answer questions and share information about the Gila Cliff Dwellings and how the region has changed over the years.

A pathway winds through a scenic route guiding visitors to the cave dwellings.

It is believed that water was much higher and thereby nearer to the cave openings thousands of years ago. Today the cave openings reside higher above the Gila River.

IMG_9430

Many nomadic people used the caves near the Gila River for temporary shelter, but they were not used as more sustainable dwellings until the late 1200’s.

The Mogollon Culture called the Gila Cliff Dwellings home for about twenty years.

During this time period, several rooms were built in the dwellings.

A visit to the cliff dwellings today offers guests a glimpse into the past and an amazing view.
